About Mark Egan

American Mark Egan is one of the world's premier and most prolific contemporary jazz bassists. His sound is airy, warm, and fluid. A founding member of the Pat Metheny Group from 1977 to 1981, he and PMG drummer Danny Gottlieb formed Elements after leaving. Their eponymous debut appeared in 1982. Elements released three best-selling albums -- Illumination, Liberal Arts and Spirit River -- between 1988 and 1991. They split after 1996's Untold Stories. His Freedom Town appeared in 2001, and As We Speak with Gottleib and guitarist John Abercrombie followed in 2006. The star-studded Truth Be Told appeared in 2010, and in 2013, he led a power trio for Unit 1. 2018's Dreaming Spirits with Arjun Bruggeman also featured guitarist Shane Theriot. Two years later, Egan and Gottlieb released the duo effort Electric Blue. In 2024, Egan, guitarist Theriot, and Saturday Night Live drummer Shawn Pelton released the groove jazz collaboration Cross Currents.
