- Meet the man who psychedelicised Motown.
About Norman Whitfield
As one of the primary songwriters and producers in the Motown stable in the 1960s and '70s, Norman Whitfield played a key role in establishing the Motown sound in its heyday. Whitfield was born in New York City, but came to Detroit as a teenager, finding a place for himself at Motown. He was the engine behind such iconic tunes as the Temptations' "I Ain't Too Proud To Beg" and Marvin Gaye's "I Heard It Through the Grapevine," among many others. In the late '60s, he helped move Motown toward the "psychedelic soul" sound, taking R&B to new places with songs like "Ball of Confusion" and "Papa Was A Rolling Stone." Whitfield died in 2008 at the age of 68.
