About Porn Sword Tobacco
Porn Sword Tobacco has the most incongruous and unlikely of recording monikers. This near-irreconcilable name for a project initiated because the main protagonist Henrik Jonsson (b. Sweden) discovered a shop in the middle of a northern Swedish forest that sold only porno, tobacco, weapons and souvenirs. Thoughts of this unusual store (and its youthful, female shop assistant named Fanny) apparently influenced the mood and ambience of subsequent recording sessions in the remote studio where the project’s 2004 debut album coalesced, with Jonsson joined by collaborators Tommy Wu Shu, Patrik and St:Redford. The sense of incongruity continued with track titles such as ‘Wife Beater’, ‘Riot Control’ and ‘Jeff Bronx The Heavy Hitter’, which implied a more aggressive music than Jonsson’s haunting and meditative music. The album’s opening piece was built around ticks and crackles and intermittent xylophone motifs, and throughout Porn Sword Tobacco the mood was one of quietude. Satiated with the mood and influence of Sweden’s woodlands, the album was similar in approach to releases by German electronica project Gas, in which Wolfgang Voigt sought to ‘bring the German forest to the disco’.
