About Regina Spektor

A veteran of New York's anti-folk scene, Regina Spektor makes quirky, highly eclectic, but always personal music. During her studies at SUNY Purchase Music Conservatory, she was exposed to blues and jazz artists, including Billie Holiday, for the first time; these sounds made such an impact on her that they became a big part of her self-released 2001 debut album, 11:11. With her frequent performances and another self-released album, Songs, Spektor developed a strong following. Soviet Kitsch was also initially self-released, but it eventually found a wider audience with Sire. Begin to Hope, her first LP of original material for Sire, arrived in 2006 and was the first in a string of Top 20 appearances in the Billboard 200. ~ Heather Phares
