Rick Udler

Brazilian-influenced guitarist Rick Udler was born in Chile to Argentinean parents, who soon moved to the U.S. His father's subsequent transfer to Brazil began Udler's love affair with that country's music. Udler moved back to the U.S. in 1982 to study jazz guitar in New Orleans, Los Angeles, and Miami, and returned to Brazil five years later. He began playing the local scenes in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro and in 1990 struck up a musical partnership with singer Maria Alvim. The duo performed around Brazil, often with percussionist João Parahyba (beginning in 1993), in between various composition projects for Udler. In 1998, Udler and Alvim recorded their debut album, Rhythm and Romance, for Malandro Records. ~ Steve Huey
