About Scanner

Named after the hand-held device that can intercept telephone and radio calls, Scanner is the recording alias of musician-artist Robin Rimbaud. Using snippets of conversations picked up from mobile phones, Rimbaud replays them alongside studio created sounds. Adorned with some of the more memorable and bizarre findings sourced from the device, his recordings encompass aural pornography to bursts of static to everyday conversations, creating atmospheric and unsettling electronica. Alongside co-conspirator Steve Williams, Rimbaud set up the Ash International label in 1992, releasing a self-titled debut the following year. From 1994 to 2000, Rimbaud ran "The Electronic Lounge," a monthly event at London's ICA. He has collaborated with Björk, Michael Nyman, Peter Gabriel, Brian Eno, David Toop, Bill Laswell, Laurie Anderson, and Autechre among many others.
