With roots in R&B, rock, gospel, funk, and psychedelia, the Chambers Brothers were one of the premiere psychedelic soul groups of the 1960s, along with Sly & the Family Stone and the late-‘60s incarnation of the Temptations. Hailing from rural Mississippi, the Chambers brothers--George, Willie, Lester, and Joe--began performing in Los Angeles in 1964. White drummer Brian Keenan joined in 1965 (making the band one of the era’s few racially integrated groups), and PEOPLE GET READY, the band’s debut, appeared that same year. But it was 1967’s THE TIME HAS COME that spawned the Chamber Brothers’ biggest selling single, the 11-minute “Time Has Come Today,” which became their signature tune. The albums A NEW TIME - A NEW DAY and THE CHAMBERS BROTHERS SHOUT! followed, but the group disbanded in 1972, only to re-form two years later. They continued to record into the late ‘70s, and to tour in the decades that followed.
