About Young Romance
Hailing from London, U.K., Young Romance were an alternative indie pop/rock duo known for incorporating styles and sounds that traversed the crunchy, guitar-blasting anthems of My Bloody Valentine and Sonic Youth with the bittersweet, grunge-tinged romanticism of bands like the Kills and Cults and the introspective lyrics of pop heavyweights such as Kate Bush.
Made up of vocalist and drummer Claire Hayward and guitarist Paulo Ruiu, the pair met while studying at Kingston University, originally starting a band with fellow students. After about a year, the two decided to move on and form their own project and Young Romance was born in 2013. The duo began penning their own songs and when a body of work appeared, they began to perform around London, landing shows alongside acts such as Mystery Jets, Summer Camp, and Slow Club. 2014 saw their debut release, the 7" single "Pale" through Banquet Records. The release generated attention for the ensemble and received airplay and praise on Steve Lamacq's BBC 6Music. This prompted them to return to the studio and begin work on their second release, the EP Wild, in which they collaborated with producer Simon "Barny" Barnicott (Bombay Bicycle Club, Arctic Monkeys). The recording proved successful, with the renowned producer managing to capture the discordant, bombastic style anchored in their sound. Like its predecessor, Wild received continuous airplay and praise, particularly from XFM, BBC Radio 1, and BBC Introducing. Success continued for the band as they embarked on a headline tour of Europe, gaining significant exposure in Switzerland, Germany, France, and the Netherlands. They followed this up with a performance on the BBC Introducing stage at the Great Escape Festival in Brighton, and opening slots for the Primitives and the Wedding Present. Young Romance then returned to the studio to begin work on their first full-length effort. Another’s Blood was released in November 2016.
