In the pitch dark, nine feet under water, police diver Flea Marley closes her gloved fingers around a human hand. The fact that there's no body attached is disturbing enough. Yet more disturbing is the discovery, a day later, of the matching hand - indications suggest that the victim was still alive when they were removed. Flea and DI Jack Caffery soon establish that the hands belong to a boy who has recently disappeared. Their search for him - and for his abductor - lead them into the darkest recesses of Bristol's underworld, where drug addiction is rife, where street-kids sell themselves for a hit, and where an ancient evil lurks.
I read this book as well as the book that immediately follows("skin") and it is one of the best books I've ever read. I was worried the audiobook would not do it justice but it really has. The reader has a very soothing voice and it has been ideal to listen to whilst working. At first I found it hard to distinguish between his female voices and his male voices, but in hindsight I think I was just used to listening to female readers who make it very obvious when they're reading a mans voice. I would recommend this book to anyone, as well as "skin".... make sure you have a strong stomach though!
Really slow ,Hard too get into.
Read this book, DO NOT listen to it read by Andrew Wincott
Good story totally ruined by the unnatural reading style and weird intonation patterns of the narrator. Don't let this happen again Mo, please!
