In September 2004, a Category Five hurricane had just grazed Cuba and was headed north toward the Gulf of Mexico and the coastal town of Gulf Shores, Alabama. Alabama Gulf Shores Zoo is a 67-acre non-profit zoo that sits one mile from the water. Patti Hall, the zoo's director, assembles her staff and devises an emergency evacuation plan: they will evacuate some 300 animals and transfer them to her home, which is 22 miles north of the zoo. One of the animals they can't move, however, is Chuckie, a 1,000-pound alligator.
