THE MILLION COPY BESTSELLER
BOOK OF THE YEAR AT THE NATIONAL BOOK AWARDS

‘Painfully funny. The pain and the funniness somehow add up to something entirely good, entirely noble and entirely loveable.' - Stephen Fry

Welcome to the life of a junior doctor: 97-hour weeks, life and death decisions, a constant tsunami of bodily fluids, and the hospital parking meter earns more than you.

Scribbled in secret after endless days, sleepless nights and missed weekends, Adam Kay's This is Going to Hurt provides a no-holds-barred account of his time on the NHS front line. Hilarious, horrifying and heartbreaking, this diary is everything you wanted to know – and more than a few things you didn't – about life on and off the hospital ward.

Sunday Times Number One Bestseller for over eight months and winner of a record FOUR National Book Awards: Book of the Year, Non-Fiction Book of the Year, New Writer of the Year and Zoe Ball Book Club Book of the Year.

This edition includes extra diary entries and a new afterword by the author.

Fantastic read

Read this book twice off the bounce. Great sense of humour along with an amazing story. One of the best books I have read. A great insight into a job I already had a large respect for. Thanks to all the caring NHS workers out there.

Had potential

An interesting book I liked the strong political undertone of hard working medics but it’s let down by the extreme over the top gags that were simply not needed . Why tell us about your wanking before delivering a baby or the poo 💩 and also itchy bottom and why hide that your gay ? It was funny and enjoyable without all that which I found detracted from the whole . I can’t recommend it as it had distasteful extreme parts which were not required. Too over the top for me . Why Adam why ?

Glad I have sent a thank you card every time ....

I felt so sad about these hard working Dr’s, relentless , ground hog day of endless adrenaline stress , no sleep , no rest bites and clearly no support . We need to protect these chosen ones , nurture them and support them . I felt very ashamed , even though I don’t go to the NHS much , of this story it is abuse , if it was in any other job , criminal prosecution would happen . We all pay for it , it is not free. We need to change this bad practice now. Supporting our health workers NOW. I will defo be marching 👩🏼‍⚕️👩🏼‍⚕️👩🏽‍⚕️👩🏻‍⚕️👨🏻‍⚕️👨🏽‍⚕️👨🏽‍⚕️👨🏿‍⚕️
