Ask the Experts: Counseling Sexual Abuse Survivors (Discussion)

Annals of the American Psychotherapy Association 2007, Summer, 10, 2

This book is available for download with iBooks on your Mac or iOS device, and with iTunes on your computer. Books can be read with iBooks on your Mac or iOS device.

Annals: In your experience, what are some of the main issues and therapy needs of clients who have been sexually abused? Wise: My experience has taught me that the main issues in working with sexually abused clients is that they most often feel invalidated and shame-filled. This is a deadly combination, which disrupts the potential for trust and healing to occur. The needs of these clients to feel truly safe necessitates fostering an underlying belief in them that may ultimately ally with their innate potential for resiliency and self-empowerment.
