A beautifully controlled and powerful story of love and conscience, will and desire which begins when a mysterious young girl arrives to take up the post at the seedy Hotel du Lion D'Or in a small French town in the mid-1930s.

Enjoyable read slightly disappointed by the ending
A very well written storey, with well developed characters and plot lines. However, I just felt that the stories contained within the book were not quite finished, perhaps this is what the author was aiming for the uncertainty of life, the future and the path all our lives will take, along with the anguish of forcing our lives down a path that we feel is "the right thing" rather than what is I our hearts, plenty of material for contemplation but just felt the ending could have been a bit more finite.
Well written but lacked enough "action" for me, a book about people's feelings and emotions rather than a book where a great deal actually happens.
More for those who like to contemplate life.
