What if finding happiness was a race against time?
Grace Cavendish knows a thing or two about horses – but what she doesn’t know is that her husband, top horse racing trainer Charlie Carrisbrook, is having a literal ‘roll in the hay’ right under her nose.
When the painful truth is revealed Grace has no choice but to move in with her highly-strung grandmother Clara and cousin Hennie; a single mum who has renounced men (at least that’s what she says!)
Determined to start again, Grace takes a job at the local cafe, Number Five. And whilst serving up coffee and cake is a far cry from the stables, she enjoys it – especially as she gets to work alongside the rather scrumptious Sam Whittaker.
But the past is racing to catch up with Grace. Can her life still be a romp to victory or will a devastating secret stop her dead in her tracks?
A must read book from a fantastic debut Author!
A book that I don’t want to put down doesn’t come along that often but I must admit to spending time reading Meet Me at Number Five whilst I really should have been doing other things, then of course attempting to read “just one chapter” before bed which turns into about ten chapters!
From the involuntary sharp intake of breath moment in chapter one, I was hooked by Lisa Hill’s colourful character descriptions and went on to accompany these characters through all the ranges of emotion that they experienced; from anger and great sadness through to amusement, hope, joy and of course, love. The locations are vividly portrayed too and so it was easy to picture both the fictional and actual places mentioned, really giving the reader a feel for the story unfolding. When I finished reading it, I was left feeling keen to find out what happens next for the main characters and despite now being in the middle of reading another book, I find myself at times thinking about them as though they are friends that I’m not ready to leave behind yet!
Meet Me at Number Five is a well written debut novel which I would recommend to all, not just fans of romance fiction as I think it offers something for everyone. I can’t wait to read more from this talented debut Author Lisa Hill, she is most definitely one to watch.
Best book I've read all year!
Absolutely loved this book! You are grabbed in the first chapter when the main character's life collapses. You are introduced to an intriguing family of strong yet totally lovable women. Follow their highs and lows, loves and hates - it's a really great story with little twists to keep you interested. I could not put it down and finished it in a weekend. Highly recommend it!
Love and intrigue in the racing community
I loved this book, full of romance and mystery and good old fashioned family drama.
High stakes for racehorse owners not only on the race track but in family life off it.
All the woman in this book are independent, gutsy and free spirited...from the gambling nana to the desperate for a baby Grace and desperate for love Hennie. It makes you root for them all the more.
Happy and sad endings both in this book, but more than worth a read.
