Poems Inspired By Titian

This book can be downloaded and read in iBooks on your Mac or iOS device.

As part of the exhibition ‘Metamorphosis: Titian 2012’ at the National Gallery, London (11 July – 23 September 2012), fourteen leading poets were invited to respond to three masterpieces by the Renaissance painter, Titian: Diana and Callisto, Diana and Actaeon and The Death of Actaeon. Inspired by Ovid’s Metamorphoses – stories of transformation – these paintings have their roots in poetry and depict the fatal consequences of a mortal tragically caught up in the affairs of the gods.

The resulting collection of poems – Metamorphosis: Poems Inspired by Titian – is now available as an ebook. This beautifully presented anthology is brought to life with high resolution images of Titian’s paintings and video and audio of the new poems they inspired, read by their authors: Patience Agbabi, Simon Armitage, Wendy Cope, Lavinia Greenlaw, Tony Harrison, Seamus Heaney, Frances Leviston, Sinéad Morrissey, Don Paterson, Christopher Reid, Jo Shapcott, George Szirtes and Hugo Williams.

The book’s introduction by Nicholas Penny, Director of the National Gallery, shows how Titian incorporated specific elements from Ovid’s verses in his paintings, and compares some of the most famous translations in English, from the first version by Arthur Golding (1565) to those by Joseph Addison (1717) and Ted Hughes (1997).

This collection demonstrates not only the quality and range of poetry writing in Britain today, but also how Old Master paintings continue to inspire living artists.

Unique way to experience it

This e-book provided a new and unique way to experience Titian and the poetry. It was great to be able to zoom into the pictures and to hear the voices-not your usual e-book and could be expanded to be a great learning and interactive tool for a wide range of topics.
