"the Naked and the Dead" [Excerpt from Unpublished 1942 Play] (Excerpt)

The Mailer Review 2007, Fall, 1, 1

The Mailer Review

This book is available for download with iBooks on your Mac or iOS device, and with iTunes on your computer. Books can be read with iBooks on your Mac or iOS device.

Editor's Note: Following is a scene (Act 3, scene 3) from the play, never before published, that Mailer wrote from August 31 to September 14,1942, in Boston. The manuscript of this play is in the Mailer Papers in the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center at the University of Texas in Austin. Mr. Mailer has generously granted permission to publish this scene, and the assistance of the Ransom Center staff is gratefully acknowledged. "Boston State Hospital: The Summer of 1942" by the late Robert F. Lucid, which appears in this number of the Review, details the circumstances of composition and deftly summarizes the preceding action. The only changes made to the original text, which Mailer typed himself, are the corrections of typographical errors and two brief, bracketed, explanatory interpolations. Act 3, Scene 3. (The scene opens in the Hydrotherapy Ward, the next day. Two of the tubs are still occupied by the patient of Act 2, scene 1, and Sandy. Miss Gannon and Ray Cobb are talking at the right. Gannon is seated at the chair before her desk, and Cobb is perched on the desk.)
