Space Yarn
The book improves as it goes on and the main characters are interesting and likeable. The light-speed development of the ship and the technology is rather optimistic, but it does allow the battle scenes an extra credibility.

I found this through a search for Iain M Banks' Look to Windward and downloaded it on a whim. I'm glad I did. the plot is gripping, the tech and dystopian social context thought provoking; I'll definitely be buying the rest of the series.
A great example of how giving something away for free can increase you profile, fanbase and earnings as a writer. Futuristic in every way.
