About the author
Cecelia Ahern was born and grew up in Dublin. She is now published in nearly fifty countries, and has sold over twenty-four million copies of her novels worldwide. Cecelia Ahern’s Inside Story: “I loved the whole experience of writing this book. I loved the character I created—a man in his 60s—as his voice was so different to anything I’d written before. It was a father-daughter story and very unique and original compared to anything I had done.
“I got trapped in the story and learned so much about marbles! I spent time with a glass sculptor who showed me how to make them and just got lost in another world.
“It’s one of those stories that a lot of men tell me they’ve read. It was a bit of a game-changer for me in that the cover wasn’t particularly feminine, which I was really happy about. It was just something very unisex that everyone could buy into. Some people think I just write smoochy-woochy love stories.
“I also had to rewrite half of it. The original version was very weird and I remember telling my husband that I knew the publishers were going to hate it. And I was half-right. My editor came back and said, ‘We love half of it’. Funnily enough, they loved the father’s story, but not the daughter’s—despite her being my age. I was just so into the father’s side here.”

A really enjoyable read
I heard about this on Radio 2 a few years ago and always remembered liking the concept of a character with a secret life.
It’s slow to start at first but it soon picks up and becomes a page turner!
