Description

Hide from the thief-taker, for if he finds you, he will take you away …
Eighteenth-century Cornwall is crippled by debt and poverty, while the gibbet casts a shadow of fear over the land. Yet, when night falls, free traders swarm onto the beaches and smuggling prospers.

Terrified by a thief-taker’s warning as a child, Jenna has resolved to be good. When her brother, Silas, asks for her help to pay his creditors, Jenna feels unable to refuse and finds herself entering the dangerous world of the smuggling trade.

Jack Penhale hunts down the smuggling gangs in revenge for his father’s death. Drawn to Jenna at a hiring fayre, they discover their lives are entangled. But as Jenna struggles to decide where her allegiances lie, the worlds of justice and crime collide, leading to danger and heartache for all concerned …

Customer Reviews

Beautifully told tale set in Cornwall

The Thief’s Daughter is, on the surface, a tale of romance and of danger - an irresistible combination for any lover of historical fiction. However, Victoria Cornwall reaches deeper and seamlessly weaves a plot that encompasses the moral dilemmas of familial love versus romantic love and of poverty versus justice. Her beautifully evoked Cornish setting is awash with dangerous and difficult choices for Jenna, through whom Victoria Cornwall brings to life the realities of a woman in eighteenth-century Cornwall. However, all is not dim and dark, the story has romance at its core and from the very first meeting of Jenna and Jack until the very end, we are willing the two of them to overcome the betrayals that look set to prevent their romance from flourishing. I absolutely loved this book - I loved the escapism it provided, I loved Jenna, Jack, the romance, the adventure and the derring-do that ran through it. It became a book about love and a book about honour and I cannot wait to read her next one.
