Childhood and the law

by The Open University

This course material is only available in the iTunes U app on iPhone or iPad.

Course Description

While a safe and secure childhood is something all societies seem to value, children’s welfare is complex and often controversial.

This pathway starts its exploration of security in childhood with the laws surrounding conception, in the cases of need to know our roots – tracing birth parents, then moves on to viewpoints from social workers, parents who have been wrongly accused of abuse, and one young girl’s experience of living in care. What determines if and when a child is removed from their home? What impact does living in care have on a child's trajectory towards adulthood? And how does this vary from country to country?

This pathway can be seen as a first step towards grasping how and when childhood and the law intersect.
