Course Description

Welcome to this short course, our first offering on iTunes U which looks at the interaction between social media and the law.The global explosion of social media platforms and usage in recent years has been mirrored across a number of our courses, with social media featuring as an emerging topic.

Here for the first time we collate these lectures (from courses including the Diploma in Employment Law, Online Certificate in Data Protection and our Diploma in Intellectual Property Rights & Technology Law) to provide a single focus on the legal issues arising from social media use.

We look specifically at the areas of general law in which the use of social media has impacted. Each topic will stand alone and is primarily supported by a video recording. Additional materials such as slide presentations are also provided together with links to interesting articles and online clips to encourage further independent study.

 Through full engagement with the course, the learner will;

  • Gain a general understanding of areas in which the use of social media can have legal implications, particularly for business
  • Be able to draft a Social Media Policy for a company
  • Be able to advise a company on the potential legal implications of a Social Media Campaign
  • Have a basic understanding of Data Protection principles (collection and storage)
  • Understand how an individual or company can be made liable for online statements
  • Develop skills in independent research
