A pair of astronauts heads to Jupiter to investigate a radio signal sent from a mysterious monolith on the moon, but their tranquil trip is endangered when their on-board computer begins acting oddly. The simple plot of director Stanley Kubrick's inspired space adventure (co-scripted with noted science fiction author Arthur C. Clarke) belies the profound philosophical implications of this classic film, which inspires viewers to ask questions about the nature of advanced civilizations . . . and of human consciousness. Nearly half a century after its release, the film's groundbreaking special effects are still breathtaking, and its ending still mind-bending.
One of the most beautifully crafted sci-fi films ever concieved. The coming together of Arthur. C. Clarkes exquisit and vissionary story with an equal in film directing makes this a MUST BUY. Do not rent as you will watch it over and over again (and if like me will need to).
Stanley Kubrics grasp on the depth of the story being told is unparrelled. His use of music to not only portray the emotion and tempo but to some how magically narrate is awe-inspiring.
Sit back relax and be prepared to have your mind blown away.
For those who find this film plotless or lacking in a narrative....they've kind of missed the point. This film succeeds almost because it is deliberately threadbare in dialogue. Like a brilliantly terse poem or piece of restrained Bach or Mozart, this beautifully shot definitive sci-fi masterpiece gets rid of all the clutter surrounding other sci fi movies. With the most stunningly constructed and choreographed set-pieces of sublime beauty, and wonderfully chosen music, fantastic cinematography and restrained acting, this blows away all space travel films made before or since, for it presents the atmosphere and accuracy of being in space like no other.
Every single shot and scene is a lesson in big screen film making. It is breathtaking especially considering it was made way before the sophistication and ease of modern-day CGI and special effects. The loving care and precision of each episode until the surreal and mysterious finale, is palpable. This is the greatest sci-fi film of all time.
Simply the greatest sci-fi movie of all time! Genre defining, awe inspiring and thought provoking. It illustrates the difference between excellence and brilliance! Stay with this meditation on the story of man and his ascension to the stars! It's worth the trip! (review by Coolhandlee)
