About the Film
A pair of astronauts heads to Jupiter to investigate a radio signal sent from a mysterious monolith on the moon, but their tranquil trip is endangered when their on-board computer begins acting oddly. The simple plot of director Stanley Kubrick's inspired space adventure (co-scripted with noted science fiction author Arthur C. Clarke) belies the profound philosophical implications of this classic film, which inspires viewers to ask questions about the nature of advanced civilizations . . . and of human consciousness. Nearly half a century after its release, the film's groundbreaking special effects are still breathtaking, and its ending still mind-bending.
One of the most beautifully crafted sci-fi films ever concieved. The coming together of Arthur. C. Clarkes exquisit and vissionary story with an equal in film directing makes this a MUST BUY. Do not rent as you will watch it over and over again (and if like me will need to).
Stanley Kubrics grasp on the depth of the story being told is unparrelled. His use of music to not only portray the emotion and tempo but to some how magically narrate is awe-inspiring.
Sit back relax and be prepared to have your mind blown away.
Simply the greatest sci-fi movie of all time! Genre defining, awe inspiring and thought provoking. It illustrates the difference between excellence and brilliance! Stay with this meditation on the story of man and his ascension to the stars! It's worth the trip! (review by Coolhandlee)
very very odd...
I'm sure for it's time the special effects were amazing and to an extent they still are, however if your watching this for the first time you will be very disappointed in the story line (non-existant). Extremely slow film, looks like it was just a showcase for the latest visual effects, which believe me get mind blowingly wierd towards the end. I am left feeling dazed and confused as to what on earth just happened and why anyone would give this a five rating as personally, I feel I've wasted two and a half hours of my life which I can't get back.
