About the Film
An adaptation based on a novel by Christopher Isherwood, A SINGLE MAN is a romantic tale of love interrupted, the isolation that is an inherent part of the human condition, and ultimately the importance of the seemingly smaller moments in life. Set in Los Angeles in 1962, at the height of the Cuban missile crisis, A SINGLE MAN, tells the story of a British college professor (Colin Firth) who dwells on the past and cannot see his future. We follow him through a single day, where a series of events and encounters, ultimately leads him to decide if there is a meaning to life after the death of his long time partner, Jim (Matthew Goode, Watchmen).
An Incredible Directorial Debut
I took my wife to see this on it's release - she being a huge Colin Firth fan. She didn't like it, thought it dull, but I thought it was an extraordinarily accomplished debut from Tom Ford, it looked exquisite, there were frames from this film that you could hang on a wall they were so beautifully shot, but he has managed to balance his style with appropriate substance. Script and performances are universally top notch, Firth and Julianne Moore have never been better. Incredibly moving and poignant classy filmmaking
Incidentally - note for reviewer 'VS747' - in the version I saw Hugh Grant's character was played by Colin Firth, you know, that bloke from Four Weddings.....
I don't know how this film can be getting such good reviews. I saw it in the cinema only because it was the only film not full. I was bored to tears with the dull plotline and just the pace it was going at.
Would advise not to buy.
I went to see this movie with great expectations, after reading the novel and the good reviews.
Sorry to say that it was one of the most boring and slow movie of the 2009,
the movie is filmed like a commercial gucci advert, everything is set to look stylish.
Colin Firth is just himself again..........
