About the Film
Comrades and lovers Amer and Raghda met in a Syrian prison cell 15 years ago. When McAllister first meets their family in 2009, Raghda is back in prison leaving Amer to look after their four boys alone; but as the 'Arab Spring' sweeps the region, the family’s fate shifts irrevocably. Filmed over five years, the film charts their incredible odyssey to political freedom. For Raghda and Amer, it is a journey of hope, dreams and despair: for the revolution, their homeland and each other. Known for his unique and intimate portraits, director Sean McAllister (Liberace of Baghdad) received a BAFTA for Outstanding Debut for this "Bergmanesque portrait of a relationship and love". "Unmissable" ★★★★★ Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian
Insightful and Impactful
This really is an unmissable film if you want to understand the Syrian regime on a human level. The film follows a Syrian family and through them you learn what it truly means to be displaced, to be a refugee, and to find yourself thousands of miles from home while that home is destroyed. Heart-breaking, but hugely important - don’t miss A Syrian Love Story.
Moving portrait of a family torn apart by circumstance
I saw this film at a packed out screening at the Ultimate Picture Palace in Oxford and I found it such a moving and timely account of a family torn apart by things beyond their control.
Filmmaker Sean McAllister follows two Syrian revolutionaries Raghda and Amer, a couple who met 15 years previously in prison, for 5 years (practically living with them at various points in the film!). At the start of the documentary we discover Radha is back in jail and Amir has been left at home to raise their three boys. The documentary then follows as the family is reunited and subsequently forced to leave Syria for France, displacing not only the family but Raghda's sense of self. This causes tensions in the family as we see their once close bond fall away.
A truly moving and human film, I highly recommend a watch!
