Plot Summary

On November 4, 1979, as the Iranian revolution reaches its boiling point, militants storm the U.S. Embassy in Tehran, taking 52 Americans hostage. But, in the midst of the chaos, six Americans manage to slip away and find refuge in the home of Canadian Ambassador Ken Taylor. Knowing it is only a matter of time before the six are found out and likely killed, the Canadian and American governments ask the CIA to intervene. The CIA turns to their top "exfiltration" specialist, Tony Mendez, to come up with a plan to get the six Americans safely out of the country. A plan so incredible, it could only happen in the movies.

Customer Reviews

Can't believe the critics liked this film. Most of the hostages were irritating, I was kind of hoping they would snuff it to be honest. Boring film and not historically accurate either, don't watch

In principle, and given he must have known he'd be criticised for it, I can't be doing with a film that presents fiction as fact. Practically, it just really gets in the way of watching it anyway because you find it difficult to care about what's supposed to be true but could equally be a bunch of porkies. Pretty uncool all round and I'm really indifferent to how many awards it's won as well. Probably the most undeserved Academy Award in history.

If you want to aim high as a film maker of history, then at least make sure your film is actually historically correct or at least close to it. One star for being an obvious chancer and thinking offending Canadians and the British (and large sections of the Iranian community, by the way) is irrelevant. Nonsense is as nonsense does.

So Overrated

Can't believe this won 'Best Picture'
