Travesty of a brilliant book

The film of the book Wolf's brilliant book, 'Bonfire of the Vanities' is a disaster, as Rolling Stone said in its review when the film came out. It's also a travesty of the plot and characters in the book with Tom Hanks miscast. There's political correctness in the shoe shine man in the bond buying office. No longer black and judge on the Bronx court now black and not white, maybe to balance the howling mostly black mob in the court. The one redeeming feature of the film is the glimpses of barrenness of the South Bronx, with its burnt out apartment blocks. More like a country destroyed by war which it was: rich versus impoverished black.
