About the Film
Its name: EVENT HORIZON. The high-tech, pioneering research spacecraft mysteriously vanished, without a trace, on its maiden voyage seven years earlier. But a weak, persistent signal form the long-missing craft prompts a rescue team, headed by the intrepid Captain Miller (Laurence Fishburne, THE MATRIX and MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE III), to wing its way through the galaxy on a bold rescue mission. Accompanying Miller is his elite crew and the lost ship’s designer (Sam Neill, JURASSIC PARK); their mission is to find and salvage the state-of-the-art interstellar horror. Kathleen Quinlan (APOLLO 13) and Joely Richardson (TV’s NIP/TUCK) also star in this gripping sci-fi thriller.
Vistally stunning with the original design of the Event Horizon. Strong cast and performances from Sam Neil, Laurence Fishburn and Sean Pertwee especially. Fast paced with the gore factor used sparingly until the very end. Haunted house in space not a slasher movie.Remembering how old this film is, it's very good and been copied since, notibly Sunshine. Soundtrack is amazing and really builds up the tension. Watch loud and in the dark!
An above average film to watch at night.
Rated a 4/5, its a good film, acting is above average. Special effects are above average, story is above average, so its just that "above average". As one of the reviews pointed out its not for everyone, but this is a horror/scifi with HORROR and GORE being the main subject matter with the setting just happening to be sci-fi.
I really enjoyed Event Horizon. Paul WS Anderson's best film I've seen so far. Sam Neill was excellent and his character, I felt, was well written. The film itself is dated technically due to special effects with some particularly dubious chroma keying but that's easy to overlook. Pretty violent and very creepy this is not a film for everyone's taste - not sure Auntie Mabel really wants to watch people peeling off their own skin etc. Some of the performances lacked any real kind of direction but the filmmakers kept the focus mainly on Neill and the film is all the better for it. Smacks slightly of style over content but I really enjoyed this and if you like Doomesque sci-fi horror this is great.
