About the Film
Oscar-nominee and Golden Globe-winner Tom Cruise ("Minority Report," the "Mission: Impossible" movies) and Oscar and Golden Globe-winner Nicole Kidman ("The Hours," "Dead Calm") star as a physician and his wife, whose relationship is strained by her revelation of a sexual fantasy in this erotically charged story of sexual obsession and jealousy. Sparked by feelings of betrayal, the physician embarks on a disturbing journey of self-understanding. One of the most anticipated films of the year from multiple Oscar-and Golden Globe-nominee Stanley Kubrick ("Full Metal Jacket," "2001: A Space Odyssey," "A Clockwork Orange"). Co-starring Oscar-winner Sydney Pollack ("Changing Lanes," "A Civil Action"), with Golden Globe-nominee Thomas Gibson (TV's "Dharma & Greg," TV's "Chicago Hope"). "...Truly the riskiest film in [Kubrick's] career... one more brilliantly provocative tour de force..." -- The New York Times.
i had to stay awake to watch the end of this film to find out if it was as bad as it really seemed ... it was. utter tripe. stick to a clockwork orange and dozing through 2001 (never made it to the end, too boring). if you want under-rated obscure directors try robert altman, or terry gilliam but not this
challenging but beautiful
Kubrick's last and most difficult viewing - but worth it for the slow beauty of the direction. Its about moral problems and making the right decisions but dont expect obvious answers to the conundrums set up in the screenplay. Kidman and Cruise try hard with the complex characters and their unresolvable issues - its seems appropriate (in Hollywood terms anyway) that they split up not longer after it was completed. If you like Kubrick you have to see this film but others such as Barry Lyndon, The Shining and 2001 make a better introduction.
Kubrick's final film may not have been what people were expecting, but this slow-paced exploration of love and jealousy is compelling viewing from the start. Kubrick's direction is masterful, and I was gripped throughout. This is not standard Hollywood fare, but a challenging film without a neat ending. The only downside is that the faux New York street scenes are not up to scratch, but that doesn't really detract from the film at all.
Highly recommended to Kubrick fans, and anyone who likes something a bit more complex than your average everyday film.
