Now you can experience the phenomenon that is Paranormal Activity in the comfort and safety of your own home! This is the story of Katie and Micah, a carefree couple who become haunted by an unseen presence in their house. They decide to investigate the increasingly bizarre and escalating intrusions by setting up a video camera to capture evidence of the demonic presence in their house, only to find much more than they ever imagined. Described by Harry Knowles from AIN'T IT COOL NEWS as "one of the scariest at-home viewing experiences ever!"
Paranormal Activity is one of the scariest horror films I have ever seen, I have only just finished watching (alone), and I am still freaked out by the film. I thought this film was just hype, and I was sceptical in watching it. Drag Me To Hell had the same hype and I was a little disappointed, it was ruined by the humour. But Paranormal Activity is terrifying. It had a low budget of only $15,000, but grossed over $100million in the US. There is only a small cast of unknown actors, but they give incredible performances that add to the growing tension of the film. It starts off quite slow, but you need to bear with it as it does pick up its pace.
The story follows a young couple, Katy and her boyfriend Micha who have recently moved into a new house in San Diego together. Katy has had previous experiences with the paranormal, as she believes that she is being followed by a ghost since she was young. She hires a psychic to advise her on what to do, but he determines that it is not a ghost but a demon. Each night Micha sets up the video camera to film all the supernatural happenings. And some of what he films is disturbing as the demon constantly torments his victims while they sleep. As the days pass the torments get progressively worse and traumatic for the couple.
For the viewer, you are constantly on the edge of your seat, the director has done a brilliant job of playing on the fears of the dark and the supernatural. It is filmed in the similar hand-held camera styles of Cloverfield, Blair Witch and REC, which add to the horror of the film. And like I said before, the cast give a incredible performance, and the tension is relentless. As a horror fan I am very pleased by the film, I have not been this creeped out for a long time, and I have seen many horror film. My advise, if you like your horror films with a brilliant ending, great story, incredible acting and harrowing scenes then this is for you, but heed the advise on the front of the dvd…DON’T WATCH IT ALONE!!!
As I see it, you get two types of horror film; those that show direct threat to the viewer (e.g. guy with chainsaw) and those that show an indirect threat (e.g. strange noises and characters disappearing without a trace). This film is definately the latter, which I think explains why people give this film a 5 star or 1 star rating. This film is a total psychological bomb and will mess with your mind, IF you are the sought of person that has a mind that plays tricks on you. The director successfully reverses the common thought that "you're safe in your bed". If you love your blood and gore, don't waste your time watching this as you probably wont get scared and not enjoy it.
Well that was 85 minutes of my life that I won't get back . . . I'm not sure whether I'm more disappointed by losing 10 Quid or wasting an hour and a half watching the film. Even with the low-low budget I sat waiting for something to happen and nothing happened. It's badly filmed, and without some of the most basic filming equipment (like microphones) had to listen hard to hear what was being said. In short, they put a video camera on a tripod and filmed a couple asleep for a few nights.
To add some interest to the story, the girl gets out of bed a couple of times and just stands there. Then she runs out of the room and screams . . . oh, and someone bashes the living room light at one point and we get to see that swinging.
Wouldn't recommend this film to anyone, save your money and buy a film with a story line.
