About the Film
For most high school graduates the middle of summer is a time to party like never before but for Megan (Elisabeth Harnois, Point Pleasant) it's a time of mourning due to the unexplained suicide of her identical twin sister. Trying to escape from her troubles she joins her friends Zoe (Amanda Seyfried, Mamma Mia!), Christian (Shawn Ashmore, X-Men trilogy), Alicia (Hilarie Burton, One Tree Hill) on a trip to an old lake house for a weekend of fun. But as strange things start to happen Megan suspects that Sophie may be trying to communicate from beyond the grave and that the summer solstice is far from just another day on the calendar.
Solstice isn't bad, but it isn't one of the greatest films you will ever see. It has a very slow start which mainly is taken up by the group of youths driving to the vacation home and drinking. When the film finally gets interesting the credits soon follow. There is a good twist in the film, which the images and flashbacks build up the story behind the ghostly going-ons.
The cast are well chosen and it is acted brilliantly. I wouldn't call it a horror film it is more of a ghostly thriller/drama, because most of the scare scenes fail. In one of the early attempted scare scenes, the main protagonist, Megan, is in the bathroom of the local shop, the tension and music start to build, and her twin sisters boyfriend opens the door, and that is it.
There are a few good scare scenes, like the ghostly figure of a girl covered in dirt with white eyes is quite creepy. The ending is another let down to the film, as soon as the film is at its peak for being good, it has ended. (i won't go any further because it will ruin the film).
It isn't one of the worst films i have ever seen, if it got to the main part of the film faster, and if it had better scare scenes, then i would rate this higher. If you are expecting a great horror film, then this isn't for you. But if you like a good twist, with great acting and some comedy, then give it a try. Is it worth the £3.99, no, if it was more like £2, then yes.
I really enjoyed this film, it kept me on the edge of my seat all the way through. Highly reccomended, and well worth the money. Nice twist at the end 2.
great movie! really
I was really surprised by this movie! I rented it just as I didn't have much to do and thought that it would be another lame horror, but in fact Its a really good movie. Great acting and for the first time in a while I couldn't predict the end of the movie! Definitely worth the money!
