About the Film
Tom Ludlow (Keanu Reeves) is a veteran LAPD cop who finds life difficult to navigate after the death of his wife. When evidence implicates him in the execution of a fellow officer, he is forced to go up against the cop culture he's been a part of his entire life.
Compelling and brilliant
A great slice of modern noir, from the man who gave us LA Confidential and The Black Dahlia. Keanu plays Tom Archer, a cop who we are introduced to as a somewhat morally vague character, and a probable alcoholic. But is that it? Is he really as bad as he seems? Who knows watch the movie and make your own mind up. We first meet him being beaten up by a pair of thugs who steal his car.. We are then treated to a wonderful scene of do-gooder doing good at the end of a .45 shooting dum-dums to rescue some young girls kidnapped for nefarious purposes? The first shoot-out, like all shoot-outs in this movie, is superbly handled - the guns in this film are done extremely well choreographed. What then follows is a wonderful and brisk movie about police corruption and how bad things happen to bad people as well as good people too. It's violent, it's brutal, the story is great and makes perfect sense, and Hugh Laurie drops in to see if Keanu is doing okay, from time to time, what's not to like? A lot of mainstream professional critics slated this movie, lord knows why, it's superlative, and simply saying that Keanu Reeves can't act is lazy as well as it's an insult, not everyone has to emote to put in a fine performance, perhaps they just do not get him.
Good for only once, Hugh Laure is still Dr. House...
I wanted to buy this at first, but decided to rent it to be at safe side. Turned out that I did right. It is ok but not worth buying for collection. Good movie, bad plot, should have been better with all those power house actors in it.
Departed meets S.W.A.T.
This is brilliant, everything I expected in a cop movie ... which includes not having any soppy romance.
