Plot Summary

1945 was a pivotal year in British history. The unity that carried Britain through the war allied to the bitter memories of the inter-war years led to a vision of a better society. The spirit of the age was to be our brother’s and our sister’s keeper. Director Ken Loach has used film from Britain’s regional and national archives, alongside sound recordings and contemporary interviews to create a rich political and social narrative. The Spirit of ‘45 hopes to illuminate and celebrate a period of unprecedented community spirit in the UK, the impact of which endured for many years and which may yet be rediscovered today.

Essential Viewing

This wonderful film should be part of the British School Curriculum. Many children would benefit from seeing this thoroughly enjoyable and interesting history lesson. Passionately, delicately, romantically and factually Ken Loach shows what can be achieved if everyday people stand together and decide to better their society. It seems that post Thatcher Britain has deprived many people of their power as a unit, the facts about our ancestors and their ability to face all adversity and come out on top have been swept under the carpet. This film redresses the forgotten achievements and reminds us of our ability for compassion and caring which is desperately lacking in modern day Britain. We can learn much from our ancestors, their story should never be forgotten, Spirit Of '45 is a fantastic reminder of what decent, This wonderful film should be part of the British School Curriculum. important insight about where we have come from in the last century...

something we should all watch in this land of (relative) plenty unless we (or our children) might end up one day like pinocchio's friends?

An insight

A very insightful and informative film with lots of interesting and clever people being interviewed. Makes you think. Makes you want to see changes and wonder how we ended up like this.
