You were never really here

First class a classic of acting and direction.

Joaquin Phoenix puts forth a truly undeniable esoteric masterclass in the form of a performance that is the epitome and personification of transcendence. It feels disrespectful and downright offensive to be classified simply as art. It’s far more spectacular, vibrant and progressive than simple avant-garde ventures into fine art i.e. Goslings’ decent albeit subdued turn in Drive or Only God Forgives. The extraordinary and poignant progression of mental instability and the colossal fire that ruptures inside haven’t been caught with this much intensity and raw power quite like this before. The relentless violence Ramsay and Phoenix put forward is not used in such a harsh topic without a justified and moral compass, it’s quite the opposite. This venture is an expedition and forcefully witnessed by its audience (quite purposefully I may add) of those who fight a deliberating internal battle within themselves. The rush of panic, blood, and depression has never felt so real, so frighteningly tectonic. If you thought Manchester by the Sea was a slow burnig venture into the perilous stagnant beyond, You Were Never Really Here is a blackhole of moral ambiguity and raging destructive aggression, melded in a tender state of flesh and blood.
