David Byrne Essentials

David Byrne's solo catalogue is a well-stamped passport that reflects the former Talking Heads frontman's appetite for new sounds. On “Regiment”, from his 1981 Brian Eno collaboration, My Life In the Bush of Ghosts, he mixes Lebanese singing with deep ambient funk; “Dirty Old Town”, from 1989, sets his wry lyrics to Puerto Rican mapeyé. Like the native Scot's adopted American homeland, his globe-trotting art pop is one big melting pot: “Never So Big”, with Fatboy Slim and Sia, is a bossa-nova song about Imelda Marcos, while his St. Vincent collaborations hint at a world beyond borders.
