Texan post-rock quartet Explosions in the Sky doesn't simply make great instrumental songs — according to its own agenda, the band aims to create "cathartic mini-symphonies", which could come across all pretentious unless you've heard their music . . . in which case that description is bang on the money. Starting out at the dawn the of the millennium, they built up an impressive head of buzz with demo How Strange, Innocence, featuring less-is-more gems like "Time Stops", and earned a reputation for stellar live sets. They then produced a run of albums during the '00s on which the song count was invariably low but the sonic payback was high, proving themselves a band big on craftsmanship, with a refined understanding of momentum and timing. They broadened the appeal of their patient approach to rock by including "Your Hand in Mine" on the Friday Night Lights soundtrack (along with other songs) and continued to astound and delight in equal measure with sixth album, 2011's Take Care, Take Care, Take Care.£6.52
