Ultravox Essentials

Ultravox started out playing punchy, glam-fuelled punk, but in 1980—following frontman John Foxx's departure—Visage singer Midge Ure stepped in to remake the band as a sleek, synth-driven New Wave outfit. Songs like "The Thin Wall" and "Lament" are brittle, bouncy and thrillingly modern, while "Vienna" and "Love's Great Adventure" combine minimalist keyboards with wild romantic yearning. Their debt to Roxy Music is audible in the suave theatrics of "Hymn", and it all comes together on "Dancing With Tears in My Eyes", a rapturously melancholic ode to disco-ball epiphanies.
