ExplicitHoovering – Episode 13: Stephen Bailey | Welcome to HOOVERING, the podcast about eating. Host, Jessica Fostekew (Guilty Feminist, Motherland) has a frank conversation with an interesting person about gobbling; guzzling; nibbling; scoffing; devouring and wolfing all up… or if you will, hoovering. This week I’m joined by comedian who is none other than Zoe Ball’s new Agony Uncle on Sunday mornings on ITV – Stephen Bailey. You can catch him at the Soho Theatre if you’re London based, the first weekend in May. I took Stephen for dinner in a particularly ‘characterful’ part of Llanelli, in Wales. We talk about those days where you’re like a bottomless pit on the food front; mental spinning instructors; fussiness; fasting and eating on first dates. All that, and it’s somehow quite a short episode. Honorable Mentions Bahn Mai Thai, Station Road, Llanelli Thai Green Curry and Coconut Rice Chicken Pad Thai The Outside div style="" class="vc_col-sm-12 wpb_col | 20 4 2018 | Free | View in iTunes |

ExplicitHoovering – Episode 12: Hal Branson | Welcome to HOOVERING, the podcast about eating. Host, Jessica Fostekew (Guilty Feminist, Motherland) has a frank conversation with an interesting person about gobbling; guzzling; nibbling; scoffing; devouring and wolfing all up… or if you will, hoovering. This week I’m joined by comedian with a self-confessed ‘absolute-w****r-level’ love of all things food related – Hal Branson. He brings me a huge rucksack full of incredible treats which we plough through like it’s Christmas, whilst, to both of our surprise, opening our hearts right up about binging, mental health and some pretty ripe stuff about our parents. Recipes Butternut Squash, aubergine and red lentil sambhar from ‘Fresh India’ by Meera Sodha. I’ve since bought it because it’s brilliant but if you’re really strapped and want this recipe pop me an email and I’ll send you a picture of it. And here’s a link to the totally gorgeous pear, rye and cardamom cake which Hal made, via Ruby Tandoh. Prettily easy made vegan using flax eggs I reckon and maybe a sweetened and spiced cashew cheese instead of the butter? But it was delicious even without the butter – so good. Honorable Mentions There are so many of these this week! The vegan wotsits are called Hippeas and you can defo get them in Sainsbury’s and Boots. The swanky coffee he brought was from Ouseborn. The filmore and union pistachio and chocolate log thing was totally sublime, beyond any health food treat I’d ever found. Hal raves about a restaurant in Newcastle called ‘Al Bayak‘ or ‘The Bake’ and his friend’s brewing company Northern Alchemy sounds pretty wicked too. And if you’re interest was peaked by the prospect of wine that looks like piss but hasn’t any chemicals in then look up Naked Wines. ExplicitHoovering – Episode 11: John Gregory-Smith | Welcome to HOOVERING, the podcast about eating. Host, Jessica Fostekew (Guilty Feminist, Motherland) has a frank conversation with an interesting person about gobbling; guzzling; nibbling; scoffing; devouring and wolfing all up… or if you will, hoovering. This week I’m joined by an actual chef – one from telly AND more importantly, real life: John Gregory-Smith. He makes me a glorious shakshuka and I make him a deeply repulsive vegan chocolate mousse which he is hilariously charming about- it was inedible. And I say that as someone who, if you’re a regular listener will know, once sucked port out of a 2nd hand rug. Recipes For John’s shaksuka – you’ll have to listen, and carefully, with a pen and a pausing finger ready. For my vegan chocolate mousse lick but be warned, unless you’re a HUGE mousse and multiple-types-of-fat-in-your-mouth-at-once fan, I’d steer clear. Honourable Mentions John’s latest book is Orange Blossom & Honey and his first book, which he also mentioned was Mighty Spice The insane Taiwanese restaurant in Hong Kong that’s coming to London summer of 2018 is Din Tai Fung The hot sauce he mentions being totally filthy and addictive from his cupboard was THIS one and the mucky Turkish sausage was sujuk “The wankiest of all roses” was Whispering Angel And the local supermarket I don’t think I could live without was the Turkish Food Centre, which has branches all over south London. John's beautiful table John's beautiful shaksuka (in the making) img class="lightbox-false" alt="shakshuka-in-the-making" title="shakshuka-in-the-making" width="1512" height="2016" src="http | 6 4 2018 | Free | View in iTunes |

ExplicitHoovering – Episode 10: Caroline Mabey | Welcome to HOOVERING, the podcast about eating. Host, Jessica Fostekew (Guilty Feminist, Motherland) has a frank conversation with an interesting person about gobbling; guzzling; nibbling; scoffing; devouring and wolfing all up… or if you will, hoovering. This week I’m joined by comedian and as it turns out, African food connoisseur Caroline Mabey. She’s one of the hosts of the brilliant self-help podcast, Self-Renovators. We talk about deep-cheese-love as well as revealing ‘the terrible mystery of Anne’. Our eyes get heart-attacks from a 1960s children’s cookbook and I try and talk Caroline out of wanting to ‘live in a terrible prison of her own making.’ Recipes This is where ‘on the internet‘ Caroline found her sag aloo recipe, from the Hairy Bikers. And those sugar-free poached pears. Tip: use nicer wine and probably, unless it’s medically required, add some f*****g sugar mate Honourable Mentions Here’s the link to oddbox the brilliant little company delivering beautiful wonky veg to all round south London (with views and waiting lists for expanding) Woah! Host, Jessica Fostekew (Guilty Feminist, Motherland) has a frank conversation with an interesting person about gobbling; guzzling; nibbling; scoffing; devouring and wolfing all up… or if you will, hoovering. In this episode I’m joined by the bright spark Tez Ilyas. We wolf down chips and chickpeas all washed down Mangoliciously. We get some fascinating insight into Islam in terms of eating. Tez teaches me about cornflake tarts and I tell the story of a time I sucked something delicious out of a rug. The Whole Beautiful FEAST | 23 3 2018 | Free | View in iTunes |

ExplicitHoovering – Episode 8: Desiree Burch | Welcome to HOOVERING, the podcast about eating. Host, Jessica Fostekew (Guilty Feminist, Motherland) has a frank conversation with an interesting person about gobbling; guzzling; nibbling; scoffing; devouring and wolfing all up… or if you will, hoovering. In this episode I’m joined by the glorious Desiree Burch. She’s playing at the Soho Theatre in London, no less, from 7th-12th May 2018. We have a lot of noisy fun in this conversation: we beat the verbal s**t out of lavender. I learn that Texans like their tea sweeter than a bee’s bum and Desiree’s housemate goes for a burrito and gets a “slap in the face”. __ Recipes Here’s the recipe for the Hugh Fernley-Whittingstall coconut, chilli squash I made. The rice I can’t find online but is in his amazing book ‘Three Good Things’. And Tammy’s sorrel and hibiscus jam will have to, I’m afraid, remain a secret. __ Honorable mentions Maurepas Foods did close in New Orleans in 2015 but does now appear to be in Hawaii if you’re passing. ExplicitHoovering – Episode 7: Carl Donnelly | Welcome to HOOVERING, the podcast about eating. Host, Jessica Fostekew (Guilty Feminist, Motherland) has a frank conversation with an interesting person about gobbling; guzzling; nibbling; scoffing; devouring and wolfing all up… or if you will, hoovering. In this episode, I’m joined by comedian Carl Donnelly whose at the Udderbelly on June 12th. We go ‘full nerd’ on vegan eating. We delve into the horror of hot melon soup and we open the door on the absolutely vital but deadly act act of licking something to find out what it is. What does Carl miss eating from the animal-product-world, if anything? You will NEVER guess. __ Recipes Carl talks us really carefully through how he made his seitan but here’s a recipe that I intend to try. And here’s one for the courgette chocolate (vegan) cupcakes which I swear were lighter and more cakey last time I made them so who knows. Just don’t rush them. __ Honorable mentions I can’t wait to check out The Gate restaurants which it looks like there’s a few of now. The Chinese restaurant I took Mikey to for that mouth-blowing birthday a few years back was called A Wong and here’s what I wrote about it after we went. And the super swanky place in Turin that Carl went to was Chiodi Latini New Food. BBQ seitan loaf and slaw Double Cupped Chocolate and Courgette Cake | 9 3 2018 | Free | View in iTunes |

Host, Jessica Fostekew (Guilty Feminist, Motherland) has a frank conversation with an interesting person about gobbling; guzzling; nibbling; scoffing; devouring and wolfing all up… or if you will, hoovering. In this episode, I’m joined by comedian Suzi Ruffell. We hear a cat stand up for cows (sort of) and I am given a ‘sting challenge’, which I think you will agree, I totally smash. We have a beetroot quandary and we talk about times (and they do exist) when you can’t eat. WHAT? No. They really can exist. Here’s the recipe which I roughly followed for the scrambled tofu. Host, Jessica Fostekew (Guilty Feminist, Motherland) has a frank conversation with an interesting person about gobbling; guzzling; nibbling; scoffing; devouring and wolfing all up… or if you will, hoovering. In this episode, comedian Dana Alexander makes me a beautiful lunch and I rustle up some vegan brownies to wolf down afterwards. Dana’s really into her cooking and we get deeply detailed about her recipes. You say cilantro, I say coriander. Also I accidentally do something very rude with salt. Dana’s recipe is given out loud in the podcast and here’s a link to the vegan fudge brownies I made. Host, Jessica Fostekew (Motherland) has a frank conversation with an interesting person about gobbling; guzzling; nibbling; scoffing; devouring and wolfing all up… or if you will, hoovering. In this episode, playwright and comedian Katie Mulgrew (winner of the Liverpool Hope Playwriting Prize) lets me come round to hers, in Manchester, for a midnight feast of gin and biscuits. Should you ever dunk a biscuit in gin? Learn how to stop soup tasting of ‘thick air’ and it’s taken four episodes but finally, a guest is gloriously non-plussed by what I’ve brought them to eat. Fostekew Glorious Fostekew
Excellent start to what looks like a corker of a format. Food is such a great starting point for conversation and I can see this being quite revelatory as well as mouth watering.
Great concept fantastic podcast
It’s like funny therapy. Eating habits good, bad and indifferent discussed and laughed about. Great mix of serious and comedy.
Yum Yum Yum
Great podcast, really enjoy the format and the discussions around the guests history and relationship with food. Best listened to while making something tasty in the kitchen! Funny and thought provoking.
