Fun, playful, and very addictive
This podcast (and I anticipate, the upcoming book) helps to recapture something that we slowly lose, not just as we grow up, but as technology isolates us from our surroundings - our ability to play.
Of course we're now more connected to the wider world than ever before, but the connections to those in our immediate vicinity, and our ability to pass time and have fun without playing a brightly coloured iPhone game are highlighted by the brilliant return in this podcast to some great games you can play with just two people and a few minutes - or more.
Each game is introduced with a jingle, a very quick explanation of the rules, an attempt at playing it with that week's guest, and the guest's review (on a scale of '1 to fun', a scale that itself proves a challenge for some). Some of the games will be familiar, like One Word Story, Question Game and A-Z, but most I'd never heard of before - such as Crambo, Glom (a personal favourite) and the various 'Artisan Games' that Ivan tailors for each of his guests. The artisan games have included Johnny Plays God and Paddy's Menagerie, and are sure to become a staple for me at parties, trips to the pub, or tedious train journies.
I highly recommend giving this a listen - you'll only need to set aside 10 minutes to know if this is going to be for you, so take that time out of one day this week to just... listen to it. I insist.
This is such a charming idea for a podcast and Ivan is an amazing host.
The idea of getting to know someone better through play — and with such analog and easy to play games — is such a wonderful conceit.
The production of the podcast is great; the musical intros to each game are incredibly fun and hearing the environment (a walk through the woods or the quiet bustle of a pub) throughout the conversation gives character to each episode.
Not only am I subscribed but I’m definitely pre-ordering Ivan’s book (and suggest you do too).
