    When Tom Ronstadt (John Simm) finds himself sacked from his job and dumped by his lover, with no-one else to turn to he decides to return home for the first time in 18 years. Having fled after a violent and unforgiving incident by his father all those years ago, he is forced to confront his past. Arriving home he finds his father, Sam (Jim Broadbent), in the grip of Alzheimer's being cared for by his sister, Nancy (Olivia Colman). With Tom's arrival she decides to take advantage and have a break, leaving him to care for his father alone. Using the time together, he begins to investigate the circumstances that drove him away all those years ago. All he can remember from that brutal beating was the name Metzler... flashing back and forth to that fateful night, can Tom help Sam remember anything to piece together the terrible secret?

    With Sam's behaviour becoming more erratic, Tom needs to look elsewhere for answers. Clinging onto the name Metzler he starts looking into library and newspaper archives about him. Discovering that he is now the town councillor, he also finds that he was a doctor at a notorious mental hospital many years ago that shut in controversial circumstances. After a failed attempt to get information from his father's old secretary, more drastic measures are needed.
    In a bid to refresh Sam's memory, Tom takes him to an annual charity event held for the Lancashire Evening News, where his father previously worked, to bring him face to face with Metzler. But when Sam's condition leaves him hiding, cowering in a toilet cubicle it looks like Tom's search for answers will be a fruitless one... that is until an anonymous letter arrives revealing a dark secret from the past.
