Kate makes a triumphant return to work a month after being fired and mediates a case between a chemical company and a cancer-stricken former employee whose granddaughter claims he was exposed to harmful substances. The claimant wants the truth more than the money and Kate is determined to do whatever it takes to get that, even if it means derailing the negotiation.

Kate tries to work out an agreement between FBI agents escorting a mysterious VIP patient and the local hospital where the man is to undergo a procedure. The case becomes more complex, however, after she discovers a patient was bumped from a donor list to accommodate the man - a prisoner who has agreed to give valuable testimony in exchange for a new liver.

A local bank enlists the company's help in dealing with its foreclosure caseload, but Kate is more interested in helping one of its customers - a woman who risks losing her property. Lauren faces a dilemma when District Attorney Davidson plans to make Justin's infidelity public, and risks jeopardising her career if she intervenes.

A felon accuses San Francisco police of brutality, a charge denied by the city's officers, so Kate and Leo try to unravel what really happened. A disgruntled former client of Lauren's tries to get her disbarred because he believes she stole money from him, and when her own efforts to control the situation fail, she is forced to consider asking Kate for help.
