Smart, savvy, sharp-suited detective Sam has his world turned upside down when the hunt for a cold-blooded murderer becomes a desperate rescue mission for his own girlfriend and fellow cop Maya. After a near-fatal car accident, Sam is mysteriously transported back to 1973 — only four years after he was born. Confused by his new and outdated surroundings, Sam impatiently tries to return to the present. But the police force of long ago needs his help, not least in solving a parallel crime. Can Sam overcome their rough and ready ways and maddening lack of forensic technology? Will he be able to get back to the present day and find Maya? Has Sam gone crazy? Is he in a coma? Or has he really travelled back in time?

Customer Reviews

Stupendous viewing.

At first I thought a supposed crime fighting time traveller was cliched, but this is actually the best drama the beeb have produced in a very long time. Dry wit along with the nostalgia and politcal correctness' worst nightmare, Gene Hunt makes this series really enjoyable. For some, it brings back memories, and for others it makes them wish they lived at this time. 100% recommended. 5 stars. what more can I say. except...if you haven't watched it you really have to watch it from the start otherwise it won't be half as good.

Fantastic series but better on DVD

Life on Mars is one of my favourite shows of recent years but I didn't watch it when it was first broadcast because it seemed like a daft story. After hearing so many people raving about it I decided to watch the repeats and was soon hooked. It's great to see some quality British shows on the iTunes Store but a certain online retailer is currently selling the DVD version of this series for just a couple pounds more and you get extras with it. Downloads should be cheaper and come with extras but I've decided not to take a star off because the rating is for the series and not the value for money. I personally wouldn't pay iTunes prices for inidvidual tv show episodes or a series but if price doen't bother you then I can recommend Life On Mars.

One of the best from the BBC

Thank you BBC/iTunes for supplying this series as a download and at a resonable price too. (HMV=£20). If only I could play it on iTunes. With the new feature in version of freezing every couple of minutes for 30 seconds it is unusable. No longer fit for purpose. Fortunately I still have an earlier version of iTunes on my laptop and it works well on my 5th generation iPod hooked up to the TV. Now that iTunes is including some good TV programmes for download maybe they can sort out the 7.6 problems so that we can play them. 5 stars for the programme 1 star for iTunes.
