When DC Rachel Bailey is dumped, her best friend DC Janet Scott is there to pick up the pieces. At work, DCI Gill Murray takes Rachel, Janet and the team through their new murder case, in which a young Turkish woman has been killed in her home and her death made to look like suicide. Rachel throws herself into the investigation, soon discovering that the victim's husband was having an affair. Rachel takes a risk when she questions the man's mistress, but has her high-stakes approach jeopardised the case - or will she get results? Meanwhile, she is also occupied with investigating her ex - and is horrified to find that he is married with children. And Janet is contacted by the brother of a school friend who was abducted and murdered when they were still at primary school. He asks if she will re-open the case and Janet agrees to take another look at the evidence.

Police drama following the personal and professional lives of two Manchester detectives. Things become even more complicated for Rachel when she reveals to her ex Nick that she is pregnant - and his unsympathetic response confirms her decision to have a termination. At work, the team face a gruesome case in which a mother of two has been brutally raped and left to bleed to death in the boot of her car. The team get a lucky break when CCTV footage reveals a man following the woman just before she disappeared - the same man who had been seen asking for a taxi to the Walden Estate. The police go to the estate to make house-to-house enquiries, and a sharp piece of detective work from Rachel leads to the arrest of teenager Luke Farrell. However, Luke's arrest sparks a series of events which leads to further tragedy, much to the horror of the team. Meanwhile, Janet steps up her investigation into her childhood friend Veronica's death and meets an officer who investigated the murder.

When a rape and murder case goes to trial, DCI Gill Murray is determined to see the defendant, Georgios Stelikos, convicted. But the case is complicated and only one woman, Hannah, is prepared to come forward and testify that she was raped by Stelikos. When Rachel gives evidence, she is horrified to find that her ex Nick is the defending barrister - and his cross examination shakes her to the core. A stunned Rachel admits to Janet that she had talked to Nick about the case. Janet is horrified - especially when Nick's defence leads to Stelikos being acquitted. A traumatised Hannah loses control and makes public death threats against Stelikos. When he is later found murdered, she is the prime suspect. Can Janet prevent the case from ending in further tragedy? Meanwhile, Nick is appalled to discover that Rachel decided to keep the baby. There is more heartbreak in store for Rachel, but luckily Janet is on hand to help when Rachel's life begins to crumble around her.

Porn actress Vicky Birkinshaw is arrested on suspicion of murdering her husband. Rachel's professional life hangs in the balance when DCI Gill Murray finds out that her relationship with Nick could have put the Stelikos case at risk.

When Rachel bumps into an ex-juror, she's shocked to discover the woman had an affair with Nick in the middle of a trial. Unsure what to do with this explosive information, she's amazed when Nick has the gall to contact her direct and, desperately worried, does everything in his power to persuade her to keep it to herself. At work, a body has been discovered on a building site. The team work tirelessly to find the killer, but five weeks later are still no nearer. During the case review, Rachel picks up on a number of similarities between the body and the old, cold cases Janet's been reading about linking the Veronica Hasting's murder. However when Rachel does some digging of her own, she stumbles across information that leads her to believe she knows who the murderer is. But can she get the information to Janet in time?

Last in series of the police drama. As Rachel is walking home, she is narrowly missed by a car which then smashes into the side of the road. The next day, she learns that the crash is linked to the disturbing information she found out about Nick's affair with a juror. Was Rachel targeted - and could Nick have had something to do with it? The latest case for the team is that of a teenager shot dead at home. His best friend witnessed the shooting but it takes all of Janet's skill to get him to open up as he is petrified that he could be next. Meanwhile, Rachel's career hangs in the balance as Gill discovers just how far she has gone in pursuit of love, and Janet needs to end her affair once and for all.
