A seasoned big-city cop mentors a rookie, whose academy experience hardly prepared him for the on-the-job training. The cop’s honest, no-nonsense approach leaves the young man questioning whether or not he has what it takes to become a police officer. Also on the force is a detective who is the primary caregiver for her live-in mother; the detective’s partner, an unhappily married father of three; an investigator who oversees two fellow gang detectives, one a former Army private and father, and the other a former stoner who turned his life around; and a patrol officer and single mom who dreams of being the first woman accepted into SWAT. Power struggles, addictions, troubled backgrounds, personal stress, triumphs and tragedies -- the cops face all of these challenges and more every day.
