When Bruce Timm and his team reinvanted animated telivision with Batman the Animated Series it was only a matter of time before the inevitable spinn off. While Batman Beyond was the sequel Superman the Animated Series began to introduce the rest of DC's comic icons. But that was later, the first season only introduced the man of steel and what a way to do it.
Of all the famous comic book charicters Superman is the hardest to pull off. He needs to be powerful, but not to powerful. Human and alien at the same time. You need to be able to relate to the guy and be in awe at the same time. In S:TAS (as it's known) they found that balance and kept too it. Unlike Smallville and it's habbit of having a lump of Kryptonite appear in the least likely of places (including printed on money like ink and just happened to be burried on the Kent farm for two decades, that no one noticed). Superman here faces real challenges and real difficulties. Not only making him beliveable but the hero we all what him to be. And unlike Lois and Clark the pay off is more than seeing them together. It's seeing how the most Starcrossed of all modern Romances really comes together.
In the end the only thing keeping this from being a five star show is the over blown sci-fi elements. In future seasons we start to explore other avenues but for now there always seems to be another alien invasion or hyper advanced piece of equipment in the wrong hands.
If you have any doubts go to the second season and buy the two parter Worlds Finest, the first crossover with Batman: the Animated Series, and make up your own mind. Even if you're not convinced you won't be disapointed.
