Album Review

The follow-up to Her Flyaway Manner's 2000 debut is this five-track effort that shows the group to have gotten much tighter and more focused in a short amount of time. Hailing from Lincoln, NE, the trio represents the Midwest's strong post-hardcore presence to the fullest, and they follow in the footsteps of local pioneers like Cursive and Vitreous Humor as well as throwing in a hint of Fugazi from time to time. The songs are all short and to-the-point, but feature heavy syncopation, often-shifting time signatures, and fairly enraged and off-key but still melodic vocals. Every song on A Rotation of Thoughts and Themes is incredibly tight, with special mention going to the energized title track, which starts things off with authority. Her Flyaway Manner does sound a bit like their local peers on a number of counts, but luckily these peers are worthy adversaries and it puts the band on a respectable level. The tracks do sound like they would be more impressive in a live setting, as the energy is all there but doesn't always blast across as intended. Still, the record is a very strong showing, and by the time the band builds up and lashes out during the closing "To the Last 23," it's almost impossible to argue that they haven't given it their all. They're smarter than your average rock band and more sincere as well. ~ Peter J. D'Angelo, Rovi
