Album Review

Amen's self-titled debut album is a collection of socially conscious and/or self-analyzing punk-metal with lyrics as harsh and uncompromising as the band's aggressive, noisy sound. It must be said that all this makes for a bleak, humorless world view (and listen), but then again, this genre isn't about feel-good sounds; besides, it's refreshing to hear an alternative metal group taking on serious topics in a way that justifies the anger and frustration they project on record.

Neo-metal act Amen was formed in Los Angeles in 1994 by singer Casey Chaos and guitarist Paul Fig; eventually onetime Ugly Kid Joe drummer Shannon Larkin signed on, bringing with him ex-Snot guitarist Sonny Mayo. Following the 1998 death of Snot frontman Lynn Strait, the group's bassist John "Tumor" Fahnestock agreed to join Amen as well, and this line-up signed to the newly-formed Roadrunner imprint I Am Records in early...
