Album Review

These aren't more barebones boilers bum rushed from the Bushes sessions. In fact, four of its six selections slither out of the group's seemingly bottomless store of four-track recordings. Super fans and Pollard apologists love these happy little diary 7"ers, especially with the raucous, raspy "Catfood on the Earwig" crackling your speakers, and the embedded hook of "The Who Vs. Porky Pig" (a biggeda, biggeda, biggeda, I give the Who the nod in this bout of titans!), but those gluttons calling for material of the cocksure caliber of Bushes' "Underwater Explosions," "Official Ironmen Rally Song," or "Man Called Aerodynamics" will come away empty.

Inspired equally by jangle pop and arty post-punk, Guided by Voices created a series of trebly, hissy indie rock records filled with infectiously brief pop songs that fell somewhere between the British Invasion and prog rock.
