Album Review

The only reason that this double-CD set doesn't get a higher rating is that the competition is so stiff — the fact is, Ashley Hutchings has delivered far more records of an excellent nature or better across a four-decade-plus career than most artists have delivered records. As to this release, it's derived from a 2004 live show at Huntington Hall, Worcester, featuring Hutchings and his 21st century group the Rainbow Chasers, which consists of Jo Hamilton, Ruth Angell, and Mark Hutchinson, running through a mix of traditional and contemporary (in traditional style) folk material. The feel of the performance is free and easy, and coupled with a near-perfect technical recording, presents something of an idealized concert document. There is also a somewhat longer DVD account available of the same performance.

Ashley "Tyger" Hutchings first achieved recognition as a co-founder of Fairport Convention in 1967, but his work and his musical influences predate Fairport Convention by several years, and he has since gone on to found and lead numerous other notable groups, including Steeleye Span, and the various Albion Bands. In many respects, he is to English folk-rock the rough equivalent of what John Mayall is to British blues, except that his recordings have remained interesting for far longer. Ashley Hutchings...
