Diahann Carroll vaulted to stardom via Harold Arlen and Truman Capote's 1954 Broadway musical House of Flowers, so it makes perfect sense that the singer's RCA debut brings her back to the Arlen songbook. The composer's complex yet accessible melodies are a perfect match for Carroll's honeyed voice and impeccable phrasing. The session pairs Carroll with arranger Ralph Burns, who couches her voice in eccentric instrumentation and melancholy strings that echo the blues underpinning Arlen's compositions. The singer responds with some of her most poignant and impassioned performances, breathing new life into warhorses like "Come Rain or Come Shine" and "It's Only a Paper Moon."
